Anytime my Sister-in-law visits, it is always an exciting time for our children. She has a sweet tooth and so she comes with a box full of sweets and she almost bullies us into allowing the children indulge. When she wants to lead them to the box of treasures usually set in form of a picnic, she would sing the song “follow the leader, leader leader” and the children will follow her leading. Where ever she turns, they turn. She would take the children around the house until they get to their destination where an unhealthy picnic awaits them.

Recently, I was meditating on a scripture in the Bible and “follow the leader” is exactly what Jesus Christ wants us to do.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 16:6 (NKJV)

Looking at this Scripture, it would have been a different thing if Jesus had said “This is the way, the truth and the life” it would mean that there is a way and He has shown us the way and we can walk on that trail. But He said “I am the way” meaning if you must get to the Father, you have to follow me! There’s no getting there without me. Where I lead, you follow, you need me till the end. “Follow the leader”. This also means that He may lead person A through a different route and person B through another route, but all to the same destination. This is why our life’s journeys, experiences, and timings are not the same.

So you may be tempted to follow person A, because you admire him, or because you think his route is easy, but Jesus says “follow me” I know the best way, a way that is tailored specifically for you”. He says

  • I am the way – If you must get to the Father, you have to follow me and only me
  • I am the Truth – The way I will lead you is the only true way. In me, you find all truth for your journey.
  • I am the Life – follow me, the truth that leads to eternal life.

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)

In your journey of life, be reminded of the last verse of the Hymn ‘O Jesus, I have Promised’

Oh, let me see Thy footmarks,
  And in them plant mine own;
My hope to follow duly
  Is in Thy strength alone.
Oh, guide me, call me, draw me,
  Uphold me to the end;
And then to rest receive me,
  My Savior and my Friend.

We love to hear from you so please share your thoughts on the post with us and tell a friend.

    Following the Jesus’ footmarks and that’s it! We are not in any competition, Jesus takes the lead, we follow.
    (Solemn pledge once again)

    ‘O Jesus, I have Promised’
    Oh, let me see Thy footmarks,
    And in them plant mine own;
    My hope to follow duly
    Is in Thy strength alone.
    Oh, guide me, call me, draw me,
    Uphold me to the end;
    And then to rest receive me,
    My Savior and my Friend.

    Thank you my pastors

    In reflecting on this post, it occurred to me that a question I need to ask myself often is “whose rule book am I following in this situation”? Obviously since I can’t “see” Jesus, a fundamental approach is to constantly look to His commandments for life guidance and associate closely with those who strive to live in alignment with those commandments. However, what I find to be a bigger challenge for us believers is not that we don’t know the way. Too many lack the heart to follow the way because the cost appears to be too great!

    Following Jesus, the correct and accurate map to God our father. Jesus is our leader and our role model in every areas of our life.
    Thanks for this wonderful reminder. Happy weekend my Pastors. God bless you.

    “Jesus says “follow me” I know the best way, a way that is tailored specifically for you”.

    From early years we are constantly pitted against each other,so we learn to compete for everything. Even when we become believers, the tendency to compete with our brethren,and argue who’s path is ‘more effective’ in our walk with Christ, comes naturally. I am glad for this reminder that we are on different paths heading towards the same destination. I pray for the discipline and courage to follow my leader on the path He has marked specifically for me to the end in Jesus name. Amen.

    On point as always.
    No wonder He chose to gift us with the Holy Spirit who will guide us through our individual paths (in Christ) to the Father.
