A few weeks ago, our family suffered a financial setback. For those of you who know us personally, you know we love to budget and make plans. This loss caused some set back in our plans, it hit us badly I can tell you that. All the thoughts that went through my head were songs like ‘On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other grounds is sinking sand’. That song gained new meaning for me. Had money become a ground for us? Money provides security, even the bible acknowledges that but you cannot and should not build your life around it, it is sinking sand and trust me it sinks very fast, I know that from experience.

We decided that we will not give room for sadness, so we bust out in songs, prayed and went to sleep. The words that came clearly to me at that time were the words – ‘Same God’. I immediately remembered a song with the same words that trended in 2015 when we dedicated our church building in Eket. I never really paid attention to the words of the entire song back then, the riding line was good enough but in this season with that prompt, I savoured the richness of the words of that song. The song was buried in my spirit for seven years because we needed the words for a season like this.

As I reflect on the story of Job this morning, Job suffered a loss of no comparable measure, he lost everything, even though, he was blameless, upright and feared God. This test was meant to prove that Job’s dependency was on God alone not on God because of the nice things that God gave him. Job had a day of multiple bad news and of all the options to respond to bad events, Job chose to worship. His words, “Naked I came, naked I will go, God gives and takes away, Praise the Lord” humbled me and caused me to reflect too.

We forget that we came to this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing so we spend our days accumulating stuff and miss out on the very essence of living. I pray that in our darkest moment, our perfect response will be worship.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
